Meet Dr. Justin Schweitzer
Dr. Justin Schweitzer is a fellowship-trained optometrist specializing in the treatment of glaucoma, anterior segment pathology and cataracts in Sioux Falls, SD. It was during his advanced anterior segment surgery care, pathology, and glaucoma fellowship at Vance Thompson Vision in 2013 when Dr. Schweitzer decided to practice full time at our facility. Now an adjunct clinical professor at The Illinois College of Optometry, Dr. Schweitzer is a national leader in the arenas of glaucoma, anterior segment surgery, anterior segment pathology and lectures to his colleagues nationwide. Dr. Schweitzer has multiple articles published in scientific journals and actively conducts research on minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, biomechanical properties of the cornea as it relates to glaucoma, cataract surgery care, and anterior segment pathology.
Education & Training
A Jamestown, ND native, Dr. Schweitzer chose to pursue his undergraduate studies at Jamestown College where he graduated with Bachelor’s degrees in Biology and Business Administration. Next, Dr. Schweitzer attended the Pacific University College of Optometry from which he graduated summa cum laude. In July of 2013, he completed his residency training in advanced anterior segment surgery care here at Vance Thompson Vision in Sioux Falls, SD, and chose to remain on staff to begin his career as a residency-trained optometrist. Among this large team of world-class surgeons and eye specialists, Dr. Schweitzer fits right in.
Dr. Schweitzer is a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and a member of the American Optometric Association, Optometric Cornea, Cataract, and Refractive Society, Scleral Lens Education Society, and the South Dakota Optometric Association. He is a current member and former president of the Intrepid Eye Society, a board member of the Optometric Glaucoma Society, and current Vice President of the South Dakota Optometric Society. Dr. Schweitzer has multiple articles published in scientific journals and actively conducts research on minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, biomechanical properties of the cornea as it relates to glaucoma, cataract surgery care, and anterior segment pathology.
Hobbies & Personal Interests
In Dr. Schweitzer’s free time, he enjoys spending time with wife Nissa and their two children, Paige and Luke. Dr. Schweitzer very much enjoys the great outdoors, and some of his favorite pastimes include camping, spending time at the lake, running, biking, and swimming. He enjoys competing in road races, triathlons, and iron man competitions. A Minnesota Vikings fan, Dr. Schweitzer loves following his team throughout their NFL football seasons and counts down to their season opener year round. Dr. Schweitzer remains focused on advancing his knowledge of optometry, placing great emphasis on keeping current with the evolving technologies and techniques which could one day transform the eye care industry.
